SHAPE & COLOUR

TASK 1
To start off, I chose 4 pictures that I have taken to create my line drawings. I used Adobe Illustrator on my iPad to create the line drawings. I tried to chose 4 very different images so that I had many options to chose from for my final piece. My two favourite drawings I did are of my cat and the smiley toy.
EXPLORATIONS
COLOUR PALETTE 1
After following the tutorials, I decided to do my own explorations. I spent a few hours exploring the different possibilities when creating shapes in Illustrator. The three examples above were made with the pen and pencil tools. I then created a colour palette I wanted to use for the shape and colour task.
TASK 2-TONAL MAPPING
I really enjoyed doing this task. I started by exploring different tone variations from black to white. After exploring with more shapes I then decided it was time to start applying what I had learned. I decided to use the smiley line drawing for this task. I found the light source in the original picture and based myself off that to create depth in my drawing. I used a lot of different shapes and tone variations to create a multidimensional piece.
TASK 3-SHAPE & COLOUR
For this task I decided to switch things up a little. I decided to add some life to my drawing by using the colour palette I created (see above). For this I really didn't have a plan, I wanted to experiment with different shapes and colours to see how they would add to the original line drawing. I spent a few hours working on this while giving myself time to properly use the tools, etc in Illustrator.
TASK 3A-COLOUR, TEXTURE OR PATTERN SWATCHES
1.YELLOW
2. GREEN
3. BLUE
4. RED
Before starting this task, I chose 4 different colours that I wanted to be included in my final piece. I decided to go with yellow, green, blue and red. From there I went through my camera roll and found pictures that were dominantly one of the colours I selected. After spending a bit of time finding my favourite pictures, I organized them by colour. I plan on using a good amount of these for my final piece.
TASK 3B&C-PLACING SWATCHES IN TONAL MAPS
After following the rest of the tutorials, I felt ready to start applying my knowledge into my work to start creating my final piece. I began by exploring clipping masks. I started with plain shapes and colours. Eventually, I started to explore more with different textures. I used some of the pictures I selected and used clipping masks to create these fun shapes.
TASK 4-FINAL & REFLECTION
There are many aspects of this project that I definitely struggled with. Within the fashion industry, design is one thing I am not overly passionate about so I’m always glad to get an excuse to get out of my comfort zone. I really feel like I did that with this project. After the first project, I was left frustrated on how to use certain tools in Illustrator. I spent a lot of time using different tools and really getting to know Illustrator. Now I feel confident enough to use it without any intense tutorials. I feel like I have grown significantly since the first project and I actually enjoy using Illustrator now. For my final piece I wanted to create something fun and bright. During our consultation you gave me great tips and feedback that inspired me for my final piece. I loved the idea of creating a repetitive piece. I am a big fan of pop art and that was definitely a large influence for this piece. I used all different textures to fill the line drawing and used a solid colour for the background. I really like the way this came out and I’m looking forward to continuing my explorations in design.
