D20 PCB
Interactive LED Art
This work is a custom-designed, decorative printed circuit board that showcases a D20 acrylic piece backlit with an array of 30 LEDs. It portrays two visual effects: a fireball frame animation and a randomized lightning flash.
Inspiration for the art piece: an icon from The Noun Project, a spell from Dungeons and Dragons, and a GIF of envisioned frame animation made using Piskell.
The D20 PCB features two modes: Lightning Flash - a randomly timed flash of light and Fireball, where bright light originates from the center and expands outward radially.
The D20 PCB was designed in EasyEDA and created using a dual-layer PCB and WS2812B surface-mount LEDs. It is controlled by an Arduino-compatible ATTiny85 microcontroller and is powered by a Micro-USB connector.
A pick and place machine was used to arrange the SMD components on the PCB which drastically reduced the time needed to assemble.
