Braunston Timeline

I was commissioned to create an illustrated timeline depicting the history of the Northamptonshire village of Braunston. The timeline shows events that have happened in the village along the top half in relation to world events along the bottom half from 43AD to 2013.
The facts and dates were supplied by the local historical society and I worked together to make sure all of the facts were correct and in the right place. The challenge of laying all of the key events on both halves of the timeline was great so they corresponded with each other. Illustrations help to pick out some key features.

Children use the timeline to learn about local and world history. The timeline is on permanent display in the village and used as a tourist attraction to help raise money via donations.
Initial brief was sketched at a very small scale showing a rough idea of how the final design will look.
After all of the information was collated it was simply cut out and positioned on a full scale mockup  to work out the rough positioning between the two sets of events.
The first draft was proofed by the researchers to check the dates, position  and information was correct before any further design was carried out.
The finished timeline was printed onto two 2m high x 2.5m wide aluminium panels that were fixed to the wall and illuminated by 6 spotlights. The panels make one 5m continuous timeline.
Due to the amount of information that the timeline contains, a restricted colour palette was used. The canals, that are a major feature of the village, are represented in blue and their distinctive shape are recognisable.
The two finished panels are shown below.
Panel 1
Panel 2
The blue line is the path of the two canals which is a key feature of the village.
