Metal Helices: An Exploration

The inspiration for this project originated from a longtime facination with the famous "double helix" found in DNA. After hand bending the spiral, I guided rods through each vertical axis. By doing this I was able to "capture" the form while still allowing a degree of movement. Only cold connections were used in the construction of the final three helices.

By altering the thickness of the metal I could directly alter the complexity of the spirals.

Helix III -- This helix uses only the tension of the spiral and the friction of the wire to hold itself together
