Redesigning Schoolbooks

The project is a collection of 6 redesigns of 6 different subjects including Physics, Literature, History, Chemistry, Geography and Biology. I embarked on the project with the desire to help students like me have a more positive and interesting view of textbooks in particular and learning in general, making subjects no longer an abstract concept, but a close friend you can see through sight, feel, and visualize easily in your head.

HISTORY

Unlike the older version of the book with its dense information, I wanted this book to be able to tell stories through real images, enhancing students' empathy for the dire times of war.

Raising awareness and national pride is the mission of History, that's why I chose Hor Tem Regular and Lost Type with Vietnamese characteristics as the two main typefaces.

Đi ngược với phiên bản sách cũ với lượng thông tin dày đặc, tôi mong muốn cuốn sách này có thể kể chuyện thông qua những hình ảnh thực, nâng cao sự thông cảm của học sinh dành cho thời gian thảm khốc của chiến tranh.

Nâng cao nhận thức và lòng tự hào dân tộc chính là sứ mệnh của bộ môn Lịch sử, đó là lí do tôi chọn Hor Tem Regular và Lost Type đậm chất Việt Nam làm 2 bộ typeface chủ đạo.

LITERATURE

The nostalgia and romance inherent in Literature is what I want to keep in this book. Poems and stories are no longer expressed through words, but also illustrations to give students an overview of each literary work.

Sự hoài cổ và lãng mạn vốn có ở bộ môn Ngữ Văn là thứ tôi muốn giữ ở cuốn sách này.Những bài thơ và truyện ngắn không còn được thể hiện qua những con chữ, mà bên cạnh đó còn là những hình vẽ minh họa nhằm cho học sinh cái nhìn khái quát về mỗi tác phẩm.

BIOLOGY

Organic, combined with a bit of vintage is the style I want to show in this book. To convey a subject made up of natural and scientific experiments in the most friendly and intimate way, colourful and fun drawings are my go-to choices.

Phong cách thiên nhiên nhưng kết hợp với một chút nét hoài cổ là phong cách tôi muốn thể hiện ở quyển sách này. Để truyền tải một bộ môn được tạo nên từ các thí nghiệm khoa học một cách thân thiện và gần gũi nhất, những hình vẽ màu sắc và vui nhộn là một lựa chọn không thể tốt hơn.

PHYSICS

I sacrificed the uniformity of this series in order to bring a variety of personalities to each subject. Therefore, the Physics book is presented in a modern way instead of as vintage as other books. As an arid subject with many formulas, I want to bring a feeling of joy and positivity through bright colours, combined with visual images.

Tôi hi sinh tính đồng bộ của bộ sách này nhằm mang lại sự đa dạng về cá tính cho mỗi bộ môn. Vì thế ở cuốn sách Vật lí được thể hiện theo hướng hiện đại thay vì xưa cũ như những cuốn khác. Là một bộ môn có phần khô khan với nhiều công thức, tôi muốn đem lại cảm giác vui vẻ, tích cực qua các màu sắc sáng, kết hợp là những hình ảnh trực quan.

GEOGRAPHY

Geography is a practical and highly up-to-date subject, so I presented it in a more modern and trendy style, and important figures and charts are also highlighted in glaring colour.

Địa Lý là một bộ môn mang tính thực tiễn và cập nhật cao, vì thế mình đã thể hiện nó theo một phong cách hiện đại và hợp thời hơn, bên cạnh đó những số liệu và biểu đồ quan trọng cũng được nhấn mạnh bằng màu sắc nổi bật.

CHEMISTRY

Chemistry is a subject that requires an extremely wide and huge amount of knowledge to master, which is mainly focused on reactions and phenomena, so the mindmap with the minimization of information is the most effective method to learn this subject.

The content is designed with lots of white space to avoid creating a feeling of being overwhelmed by a large amount of information, besides, there are soft-color highlights to mark important information, facilitating the eyes to search and learn the equation, phenomenon,... In addition, the white color as the main theme of the book reminds us of a laboratory.

Hóa Học là một bộ môn đòi hỏi một lượng kiến thức vô cùng rộng và khổng lồ phải nắm vững, kiến thức chủ yếu được tập trung phần lớn từ những phản ứng và hiện tượng, nên việc tối giản hóa thông tin và sơ đồ tư duy chính là phương pháp tôi nghĩ sẽ mang lại hiệu quả cao nhất để học bộ môn này.

Nội dung được thiết kế nhiều khoảng trắng để tránh tạo cảm giác choáng ngợp trước lượng thông tin lớn, bên cạnh đó là những mảng màu highlight dễ chịu để đánh dấu những thông tin quan trọng thuận lợi cho mắt tìm kiếm và học phương trình, hiện tượng,... Ngoài ra, màu trắng làm chủ đạo của cuốn sách làm ta liên tưởng đến phòng thí nghiệm.
