Women have been held responsible for the suffering of mankind through the ages. Mythology and religious texts are replete with misogyny. Greek mythology states that mankind gained knowledge of fire and Zeus punished them by sending Pandora! Why else will poor Eve be the one to fall for the snake’s temptation and bring down the wrath of God almighty, on our heads? Organized religion seems to have a very condescending attitude towards women. But, was it always like that? There were times when Women were worshipped as Mother Nature incarnate. They were needed, valued and respected for their contribution to this world, on equal grounds with men! I wonder what went so drastically wrong in people’s (of both sexes!) perception of women, to bring about such a huge shift in their status, from being goddesses to being the seat of evil and corruption; two extremes. Why did we stop respecting women just as a person, a human being? ‘Original Sin’ (2008) is my obeisance to that fateful journey of the feminine, from the pedestal of a deity down to being the conniving temptress and ending up as the mere object of pleasure and spite for the male ego.
