Sophomore-year form study project.
“Rotoform” is rotationally symetrical, encircling
a captured space in midair.
For our "rotoform" form study, we were tasked with designing a polystyrene plant vessel, vacuum-molded from a lathed wooden form.
The shape of the vessel is inspired by the succulent plants inhabiting it.
The vessel was made by lathing a wooden form (below, bottom shelf), detailing (adding the opening, flat foot, and other refinements), then splitting the wood and vaccum-molding heated polystyrene sheets over each side of the wooden form. Finally, two styrene forms are joined and fused, and the flange is shaped (as on the top shelf).
