椅合桌

This tea table/bench design is a symbolism of Chien Ping's relationship with his brother. "Each of us separated from each other by our parents in the house to ensure that we do not cross each other’s boundary. The left and right flank are us respectively while the middle one is our parent ensuring that we do not cross each other's line. As time passes, we accept each other's differences and form a stronger bond, when the table is separated, it symbolises my younger self with a weak bond with my brother and when it is pieced together, it symbolises my older self with the stronger bond with my brother."

A dual purposes coffee table when pieced together for large gathering (with social distancing of course) and individual benches when it is separated apart for individual usages.

The fabrication parts of the furniture is joined with mortise and tenon, as I want to fully utilise the beauty of wooden joinery technique to show how sturdy and durable it can be even without the usage of screws and nails which are deemed to me as foreign bodies that enters the wooden furniture. Inspiration for this furniture design is to have a space saving furniture in Singapore household that homeowners can rely on for personal usages and during gatherings.

The concept behind this lies on the philosophy of eastern collectivism as a coffee table for gatherings and western individualism for individual use.
