Graduation Project 1: Cymatics of Emotion

GRADUATION PROJECT
INDEPENDENT PROJECT: CYMATICS OF EMOTION
This project explores the concept of sound and how it directly relates to our emotions. For this project, I investigated the relationship between sound and emotions, as well as how it can be presented in a visual form using graphic design.

I undertook a number of different research methods to complete this project, such as researching on the wheel of emotions, mood lines used in design, the science of cymatics, synthesizer waves, as well as conducting an experiment which involved associating various emotions with different sounds heard in our everyday lives (such as shaking keychains, cutting vegetables, starting up a car engine, and the ringing from a door bell).

For the final outcome, I created an infographic to display my findings from both my research and experimentation processes, as well as a number of short gif animations which visualizes the relationship between 2 opposing emotions, from top to bottom being joy vs sadness, trust vs disgust, anger vs fear and anticipation vs surprised. The use of simplistic shapes to represent the relationship between the opposing emotions is influenced by mood lines used in various forms of design, as well as synthesizer waveforms for different sound frequencies.

Overall, this project has allowed me to delve into my interests in both music and graphic design, and to experiment with the two areas to create an outcome which help people understand the relationship between the type of sounds we hear and our emotions.
