People with mental health problems can be treated both in the community and in hospitals, and behavioral health nurses practice in both settings. Behavioral health nurses work with both psychiatrists and psychologists, assisting them with tasks. This type of nurse usually deals with patients with conditions such as anxiety and depression. Mental health nurses administer psychotropic medicines as well as evaluate the progress of a patient and monitor the side effects of medications.

They also help with self-care and recreational activities and offer instruction and advice for patients to empower and motivate them. Unlike psychiatrists or psychologists, behavioral health nurses cannot diagnose conditions or prescribe medication, but they can suggest changes of environment or lifestyle, which can benefit the patient and increase their quality of life.
