Meígma: A Basic Weaving Project

As a part of our basic weaving course, we were to weave a piece inspired from any weaving artist. Mélange is a woven piece inspired from Gunta Stölzl's woven piece 5 Chöre (5 Choirs) of 1928. The artwork has many colors, geometric designs and overlapping designs.

Picture of Gunta Stölzl and her artwork 5 Chöre.

Mélange is a piece woven on a table loom that uses the same colors in the warp and weft to maximize the number of colors with minimum number of colors unlike the inspiration piece. The piece uses color and weave to achieve this. It is an exploration of different designs. Many of the designs use lifting orders which are alternatively reversed to create overlapping designs. The weft colors are also inserted in stripes in many of the designs to create many colors.

Woven Samples -
Left column is the front of the designs and the right column is the back of the designs.
Exploring different simple twill based designs.
Exploring lifting orders and their reverse to give an interesting overlapping effect.
Exploring houndstooth structure, twill and complex designs.
Alternating different colors in the same design and trying intricate designs.
Other complex twill based structures and weft heavy structures.

I would like to thank Sucharita Beniwal for her guidance. Special thanks to Kamlesh bhai, Shailesh bhai, Amit bhai and Mahesh bhai for their help and support. Feedback is appreciated.
