Providence Waterfront Development

This quick Urban Design Principles warm-up exercise had us investigating a new development for a riverfront site in downtown Providence, RI. Opportunities for prime public and/or commercial space are ripe for this site that is currently used for surface parking. My proposal emerged from an interest in the historic wharves that served Providence's shipping industry at the turn of the century and can still be seen in the orientation of the small streets and alleys that remain today.
Site plans showing historic (left), present day (middle) and proposed (right) development, which accentuates the historic orientation and extents of the streets (which used to extend as wharves into the river).

Iterative process for exploring massing options.
