LUNETTES, Customisable Glasses.

We were set the challenge to explore the possibilities that digital modelling tools and additive manufacturing present to design and manufacture objects.

As seen is our final outcome- 3D printed glasses, with interchangeable legs- a unique idea in which there seems to be a gap in the market for. This gives the user the opportunity to personalise their outfit by changing the legs of their glasses as they wish.

We have designed fashionable, unisex frames. We were interested in making our legs interchangeable, adding an element of personalisation. With this arose the challenge of how the legs would attach to the frames. We were inspired by the classic dowel joint. This style of “pin and hole” joint can be seen in smaller scale pieces, examples being Lego and caps adjustable straps.

First Leg Design-

When closely looked at, many cells form a beautiful, organic pattern. We chose this design due to its complexity which utilises the positive aspects of using a 3D Printing machine. A neat, attractive appearance was created and can be appreciated by both males and females.
This style of leg would be printed in a metal such as steel, brass or similar so the pattern could be as fine and unique but much stronger. The desired effect of this design was for it to be sleek, unisex and organic.
Second Leg Design-

The design shown was inspired by ethnic patterns that can be seen in cultures across the world. Patterns such as this could make for an aesthetically pleasing pair of glasses legs which fit in with current fashion trends. The result of this is likely to be quite feminine and hopefully appear to a large market.

Initially the pattern was drawn. Following this, the drawing was live traced on illustrator before being exported to Rhino. This is an exciting way of customizing which can allow our users to fully customize their legs.
This design is busy and organic. Ceramic seemed to be an appropriate material to render this design in for the matt, soft colours compliment the over all pattern,
Third Leg Design-

This stage of leg design features fashion elements such as iconic patterns and traditional oriental symbols. The leg designs are youthful, fashionable yet focus on simple structure.
Branding-

The French translation of glasses appealed to us for "Lunettes" depicts designs which are playful yet elegant. Captured below is how our branding could appear on merchandise and a webpage. Our webpage design would allow people to purchase glasses frames, browse our range legs or design their own legs.
