Amazing Animals: Penguin

Amazing Animals: Penguin
Background
I was tasked with the challenge of adapting the same subject matter four different ways. Four different aesthetics and a range of different mark making techniques to serve four different commercial functions. My chosen subject matter was a penguin which I created a realistic encyclopedia illustration, an iconic corporate logo, a storybook illustration, and a gestural illustration.
Reference Image
Encyclopedia Illustration
To create the encyclopedia illustration, I printed the reference image and began the graphite transfer process from the printer paper to bristol board. Using a 4H pencil I began to shade and create value within the penguin, gradually using softer and darker pencils. It was very important to continually check and pay attention to the vast contrast of the highlights and contours on the original image to capture the realism in the illustration.
Encyclopedia
To create 20 gestural illustrations, I used a variety of different mediums including pens, markers, pencils, and ink on printer paper. I worked loosely and very fast to create 20 illustrations, all taking 30 seconds or less to complete and capture the essence of a penguin.
Gesture
To create 18 corporate logos, I used a different principles of design to uniquely draft iconic logos while still staying true to the reference image. I first began with tracing paper to capture the contour of the animal. I then erased, colored in, and traced to produce these designs.
Logo
To create 9 storybook illustrations, I deliberately thought of qualities and references that a penguin possesses. This includes metaphorically, mythically, and pop culturally. Using tracing paper, a sharpie, and a micron pen I was able to produce designs that maintained the original body position and size of the penguin while creatively changing it all together.
