Alternative layouts, typically for emblems like this, necessitate a horizontal version as well, which can be used for horizontal banners.
Because it's easier to see the composition in BW, I started with that. If the BW color looks good, I'll continue adding color.
This is a rough sketch; if the final result is vector, I rarely clean the sketch.

The entire process of creating this illustration was done digitally, but it is designed to look classic. The first step was to draw a rough sketch and inking in Photoshop. It was then converted to vector using auto trace. I didn't trace manually because I wanted the line details to be a little rough to make it look more natural.
