Graphical Abstract for USGS - Pacific Walruses

Graphical Abstract for USGS - Evaluation of Satellite Imagery for Monitoring Pacific Walruses at a Large Coastal Haulout
This graphical abstract is the first graphic I've completed through my Virtual Student Federal Service internship in collaboration with USGS Alaska Science Center. The objective in the design of this graphic is to work as a visual aid that is connected to the investigation of biologists A.S. Fischbach and D.C. Douglas.

This project took about 4 weeks from start to finish and less than a week to finish the final graphic. Before I sketched my first ideas, I researched how exactly graphical abstract images helped communicate science research and how they differ from other types of visual products.

The aesthetic control of this project remained mostly based on my experience, but during my initial research of graphical abstracts some design language started to become noticeable in the work of other designers. My conclusion was that a vectorized graphic was the solution, so I utilized Adobe Illustrator to design the graphic with the exception of the two satellite images that I received from A.S. Fischbach.

Days later the graphic was revised, approved, uploaded to USGS website, and shared in connection with the investigation by A.S. Fischbach and D.C. Douglas.
