This project was part of a two-week charette as a continuation of a research grant investigating how autonomous vehicles (AVs) will shape the future of our cities and thus its design. Equipped with the research team’s findings, we came up with a comprehensive design strategy for nearby Somerville, MA. The transdisciplinary team, including engineers, ecologists, urban planners, architects, landscape architects, and communications professionals, together created a comprehensive plan that in part informed the new design of Union Square. As part of the street design team, we zoomed in on Somerville Avenue to explore how AVs can shrink vehicle space requirements along the streetscape to ultimately enable more accessible, sustainable, and community oriented corridors. We proposed three design strategies that could be deployed along the avenue that fulfilled this vision. We were able to augment the sidewalk for safety while also replacing sections of the road with green space and community gardens. The team also pinpointed opportunities for creative, “smart” furnishing for the street, such as adaptive seating that can retract into the ground and smart lamp posts with retractable solar panels to collect energy during daylight hours. Overall, these designs would allow Somerville to become more walkable, community-oriented, and environmentally friendly.
