ILL 101.3 - PERCEPTUAL PRINCIPLES AND MEDIA  - FOREST DRAWINGS
Brief outline
With a specific focus on tonal narrative and designerly finish, and based on the Ill 101.1a brief, this project was an introduction to drawing and fundamental drawing principles and techniques. It also introduced us to various media. The second part of this project is about forest drawings. These tasks focuses on how to communicate something visually with a simple and sound composition, using composition formats such as the rule of three thirds or the golden rectangle, and having various forest images as the content.
Deliverables
Outcome 1 - Atmospheric forest/ tonal narrative 1 (dark to light) on A3 with graphite pencils
Outcome 2 - Atmospheric forest/ tonal narrative 2 (light to dark) on A3 with graphite pencils
Outcome 3 - Attempt 2 of tonal narrative 1 (dark to light) on A3 with charcoal
Outcome 4 - Attempt 2 of tonal narrative 2 (light to dark) on A3 with charcoal
Rationale
For my first attempts, I approached the two graphite drawings with an idea to hyper fixate on texture and mark making, however after I got feedback I realized that the tedious mark making distracted from the communication of the drawings which was into the light or into the dark. I then decided to go for simpler and less busy compositions for the charcoal redo's, and I found that they communicated better. This project helped me criticize my own work, which I usually have a hard time doing, and it helped me see my work and transform it to communicate better. I completely changed my subject matter, and although it was extremely time consuming, it helped me develop my understanding of the importance of trial and error, and practicing until you get the message across. For the project redo, I approached the drawings with more sensitivity and a lighter hand. I felt that there were too many harsh outlines in my first attempts and so I worked with negative space to define form. I also worked with more interesting and diverse compositions, I worked with different textures - flowers, grass, leaves and buds.
