Arrakis
Landscape illustration from a series of mine called Worlds. Of course this is planet Dune, from Frank Herbert's amazing universe. I wanted to play with geometry at least a little bit here, as well as with somewhat complimentary colours. At the same time I didn't want to overload it. There were so many things I could have used here: the hand of god on the larger planet, or an actual sandworm in the distance, or a thopter, a harvester...
Instead I thought I'd place something that's not really fully defined in the background - perhaps it's an ecological station, or a military base? And in the foreground there's both the land, and a man-made structure, and also the fremen, or at least people equipped to brave the desert. I wanted to mimic the simplicity of the first illustration, Gethen (scroll down to see).

Other illustrations in this series are:
Gethen - The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula Le Guin, 1969
Regis III  - The Invincible, Stanisław Lem, 1964
Fomalhaut II Rocannon's World, Ursula Le Guin, 1966
