Oftentimes, tools are designed to be strictly functional. A kitchen tool is used and then tossed into a drawer until its next use – hidden away and cluttering up space. What if tools could be displayed proudly instead? I am designing a bottle opener with such a presence that it demands to be put on display instead of being shoved in a cupboard. The piece will stand on its own when not in use and can act as a sculptural piece of decoration. This bottle opener is a high-end object, designed to make a statement when it is displayed.
It is intended for young adults who are professionally established and can afford little luxuries occasionally.
Existing bottled openers were used as guides for sketch models of both the opener mouth and the opener’s overall shape. These forms were tested to ensure that the final bottle opener not only looked pleasing, but functioned properly as well.
The bottle opener will be cast in bronze to make it durable and give it substantial weightiness. It will fit comfortably in the hand and function easily.
