SLA Printing Project

Problem Statement: A 34 X 34 X 75 mm^3 diaroma. Design a 'Breathtaking' model within the diaroma and it should be touching atleast two walls of diaroma.

Solution:

Idea- Anything moving will always be more breathtaking than a static model, so started with incorporating different joints in the model.Played around with different joints that can be printed-in-place in SLA, however finalized on a ball and socket joint where ball part and socket part will be printed separately within the diaroma then pressed in place.Also added a bevel gear set in the model to actuate motion.

Started with an idea of building a zeotrope model, but halfway within design process , after seeing actual prints realized that the zeotrope model needs a high rate rotational motion provided by a motor in order for the animation movements to be visual. But had already developed a ball socket and gear base animation model on CAD. So to make use of the CAD models developed started thinking on how the existing model can be used to make something different. That is when the idea of making a slightly modified music box popped in. Increasing the height of the existing gear base ,added protrusions on the vertical wall that acted as notes on the drum and mating protrusions that acted as interference for the drum protrusions to create sound.

Working of the design:

The main theme of the design is Harry Potter. The famous musical note of the harry potter theme will be played when the drum is rotated using the handle manually. The rotating handle will rotate the mating bevel gear. The main drum hence will rotate , the noted that are on the surface of the drum will then interfere with the protrusion on the vertical wall. These protrusions upon deflection will generate a small sound, and overall recreate the harry potter song. To add some intricate designs in the model and use the SLA printing properties to our advantage the golden snitch design cavity is made. The whole model is printed in clear SLA material, hence the inner cavity will be an eye catching feature

This project is still in progress, will update on the final results once completed. The entire model has been designed in solidworks and cad models built from scratch.
