Yoobee Character competition modelling

I was asked to model and prepare these characters for printing as prizes for the winners of a Character competition run by Yoobee School of Design here in New Zealand.

As the process of modelling for printing was fairly new to me, I was rather pleased with the overall results. Most of the models turned out to be solid 3D prints. There were a few small problems, mainly with thickness and size. I have learnt a lot from the process and know going forward what to look for in the next episode of 3D prinitng.
It was fun and very rewarding to see the concept drawings get turned into Maya files and then printed. I only wish I could have kept some of them.
This is CupCake. The character took out one of the main prize categories.
This is the dragon. The original character sat on grass in the concept sketch. I put it on a pedestal to make it more appealing and stronger for printing.
Here is Eugene. This is prior to posing. The UFO and controller remained seperate and were glued in place after printing.
This is the LandMoose. A unique character. This was also a main category winner.
Here is Mallory. Its kinda creepy with its big claw like hands but it has quite an appeal.
This has to be my favorite. Her name is Novi. She has a red bird for a heart inside a birdcage chest.
Rex is a character that seems as though he's been built using origami. He's big and powerful and mostly black.
The Daddy. An awesome charcter with lots of charm. He was the first charcter I started in this collection and the last one to finish. I enjoyed figuring out how the bandages could work.
These are the resulting prints.
The LandMoose was printed smaller than I had asked for. The consequence was that the thickness of the wall caused holes in the mesh. It was disapointing. I'm sure that it would look really great at the larger size. Something the competition winner would be proud of.
The bird on the swing was printed at the same time and in such a way that it can still swing. Very cool.
As you can see with 'The Daddy', the mesh wall on his leg was too thin. It broke on the printing table. Anything less than one millimeter and the printer will have trouble holding it all together.
