NWBRV COMMUNITY THEATER

The Neighbor Works Blackstone River Valley (NWBRV) Community Theater project sought to reimagine the Blackstone River as a community resource in a new light. As the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, Woonsocket, Rhode Island, the Blackstone River played an important role in the community dating back to the 1800’s.  Historically, the river was used as a power source for the town’s textile mills. This project proposed a renewed purpose for the Blackstone Riverfront as a power source for community. The Millrace revitalization project will be a venue for a confluence of activities for the whole community to enjoy. The project encompasses the entire millrace district, and binds all of the once disparate buildings into one bustling downtown locale. From the street corner on South Main, the community accesses a patio that is now a more intimate and personalized location for community activities. Users are then drawn down through the snug alleyway to the waterfront where guests might enjoy a number of small performances and events on one of two newly designed stages. The stage designs were inspired by the natural flow of the water and the curvatures of the riverbanks to make one seamless gesture from the street front to the river bank. Once users reach the water they can enjoy the newly formed Riverwalk that connects the Island Place Historic District, Millrace District, and the nearby park— thus intertwining public spaces with the natural landscape and water.
