Project Fall 2015

The theme of the collection revolves around the effects of war on humans and the country, emphasizing the imagery of stained glass.
Blood. Sacrifice. Pain. Fear. Destruction. These terms come to mind when one thinks of post war. I emphasize, ‘they come to mind’, yet are not easily felt by somebody who has never experienced this profound level of war. To portray an emotional quality I had never experienced, I decided to delve into this.
In my process journal, I explored the anger felt by individuals after the war in England. This allowed me to empathize with the sufferings and danger of such experiences. To produce this effect in a tangible manner, I aimed to express these emotions using fabrics. Considering we often undermine the visual experience of objects during war, I decided to focus on the details of such tragedies. For example, the broken glass scattered on floors. Just as men in war become pieces of a bigger picture, glass was portrayed in the same way. Thus, I included lightening that hits the glass while it breaks apart and pictures of broken glass reformed into colorful stained windows. Putting broken pieces together gives the feeling of wholeness, just as humans experience tragedy and trauma as a community and feel as one. In the same way that shattered glass becomes a colorful stained glass windows, transition can occur in the community and in the man himself. Pieces are shaken; they fall apart, and come together beautifully.
