The Walrus Editorial Illustration

Brief
We were required to visually interpret the ideas and topics brought up in a given text, in order to create an engaging illustration for an article, published in a magazine of our choice.

Solution
For this project, I chose to work with a Canadian general-interest magazine called The Walrus, which covers a wide variety of topics, from education to business to literature, and often uses illustration for their articles.
Our given text, What is Design Thinking and Why It Is So Popular, unpacks the process of design thinking and how it is applied within design, as well as outside of design. My concept was to portray design thinking as a Russian Matryoshka doll- an object which is unpacked to reveal smaller versions of itself. This links with the design thinking process uncovered in the text, and with the irony of the fact that the article is also unpacking a topic to the reader.
