"It's Okay to be Different" Storybook – Educating Gender Stereotyping to Children
Brief: Reflect on our role as designers and explore ways which design skills and interest can care for our world.
Gender Stereotyping was an issue I decided to work with for this project.
Research & Data Collection
Base on the results from the survey, people are not taught about gender stereotyping. There are also uncertainty on the differences between gender stereotyping and gender differences due to biological body types. Furthermore, responders are keen to teach gender stereotyping to their children in the future, but are mostly unsure how to start.
Hence, I decided to create a children book for adults to teach their offspring, aged 5-8years' old, about the issue.
Style Setting
Created 2 colour options, where the 2nd one were eventually improved and used.
Final Outcome
The book contains colourful illustrations to attract children, and simple sentences for them to understand. Although "gender stereotyping" are bombastic words for children, I break it down by showing several characteristics that are against gender stereotypes – the male character, Justin, has long hair and cries when he falls, while the female character, Matilda, likes dinosaurs and plays soccer, without mentioning the words "gender stereotyping."
