Kreation is a knock down- modular steel storage solution for bedrooms consisting of modules (in widths of 400, 450 and 500 mm) which can be customised according to their requirements. Study and T.V unit, an extension of 'Kreation' was designed for 'Godrej Interio' based out of India during my tenure at the firm as Industrial Designer in 2012. It was awarded bronze in 'Designomics' award in 2013 in recognition of strategic designs for business.

The scope of work undertaken in this project was to design and develop modular study and media unit for 'Kreation' storage system with minimum number of new unique components . The intent was to provide a mass produced yet customisable offering for the customer segment currently opting for carpentered storage solution for their bedrooms.The user need identified was to get a coordinated look with maximum space utilisation for their homes in Urban India.

With the rise in number of people moving in urban regions of India, we today face a crunch in the amount of space available for living.  Average floor space available to people for their homes have significantly reduced, forcing people to maximise their storage space, preferably vertically so as to save floor space and crunch multiple activities in a single room.

 

Insights were captured from several user studies and their home visits for understanding expectations and usage of study and T.V units in their bedrooms, floor plans of typical rooms in urban India, ergonomics and aesthetic preferences.

The challenge in the project was to design modular, knock-down and low cost solution for study and T.V watching activities for people who already posses 'Kreation unit' or intends to buy one.  The design should also give users flexibility of attaching the unit either on ends or in the middle, without compromising on a  coordinated look for the room. Another challenge was to design for efficient and concealed wire management for multiple electronic products to be used with the unit, since it shall be placed against the wall without pre-designed wiring system in the room.

The solution designed has the same set of components to either make the study or the T.V unit, minimising the components at factory level as well as giving the user flexibility to convert one unit to another. 

In collaboration with engineering team, several drawings and details were worked on to arrive at solution to several challenges in the construction and assembly of the modular system.

One of the challenge was to design joineries for the knock down as well as modular nature of the system, which has to seamlessly attach to the existing system of wardrobes at ends or in between. The joineries also should help in quick assemble without being apparently visible.
