In our Materials Exploration class, I collaborated with Layna Chen to create a model which best reflected the transformation of light within the Kresge Chapel by Eero Saarinen. The building was completed in 1955 and being a nondenominational chapel, the fuction of the building was to encourage students to freely pursue religious interests by maintaining an atmosphere of religious freedom. This was achieved not only by the form of the chapel but the ways light entered the isolated space to induce this atmosphere.
View through narthex into chapel.
Undulating light reflected off the moat along the brick walls.
Light entering the lantern reflected off the brazed steel installation and marble altar.
