They burned her cruelly to death in the marketplace of Rouen, with eight hundred soldiers round the stake, lest any should attempt to save her. They had put a false accusation on a paper cap, and set it on her head: it was written that she was "Heretic, Relapsed, Apostate, Idolatress". This was her reward for the bravest and best life that was ever lived. Andrew Lang, "The Story of Joan of Arc"
I always admired her. Her bravery, intelligence and nerve never fail to amaze me and how she was punished fills me with rage. I like to think of her and look at artworks depicting her, because I find some kind of comfort in the thought that a woman like this actually lived. That she is not some fantasy made-up character but a real, poor, illiterate, teenage girl who gained such strong authority and changed her country's history.

I based this portrait on marble statue by XIX century sculptress, Princess Marie of Orleans.
