John M. Fife's profile

BYU Creates Technology with NASA

Chicago resident John M. Fife is an alumnus of Brigham Young University (BYU) and the president of Chicago Venture Partners. While a student at BYU, John M. Fife studied statistics and computer science.

In 2020, BYU students collaborated with professionals using funding from NASA and USAID to develop software that predicts flooding and droughts. The software is called GEOGloWS. It gathers information from weather forecasts and determines where precipitation may fall. With this data, the software can anticipate water levels in rivers and streams around the world. Countries can use the data to help keep their communities located near rivers and other bodies of water safe.

The lead professor on the GEOGloWS software project was E. James Nelson of the Hydroinformatics Lab. Other software developed by the lab includes the open source web app development decision-support software Tethys Platform; the python toolbox HydroStats, which is intended to be used for streamflow prediction; and an app that will synthesize the information from NASA’s original GRACE mission and the GRACE Follow-on mission.
