Shanlian is famous for its hand-made "lakebrush", a type of chinese calligraphy writing brush. In recent years, the tourism industry has been developed with lakebrush making as its highlight. We were commissioned to design an installation art that can represent the characteristics of the lakebrush.
The installation "Trace of Light" is inspired by the shape of a brush--- the body is neat and the tip is sharp. A gap with a chinese calligraphy shape is opened in the center of the long and narrow canopy by the lake, and optical fibers hang down from both sides. Its naturally drooping arc outlines the shape of a lakebrush, as if calligraphy made of light pierced the night sky, leaving a brilliant stroke.
In order to test the effect of the optical fiber with lighting programs, I made this interactive model. The model uses two addressable LED strips as the light source, and the light is transmitted into the 1.5mm thick high-brightness optical fiber to produce a translucent effect.
The optic fiber light has two different lighting modes:
Mode A: Flowing Light Traces. Random but harmony color light sequences, rolling in one direction, as if the drawing stroke is being made.
Mode B: High-five Reaction. In response to the sound of high-five, a sequence of light is randomly generated, flowing from the side of the sound maker to the other. The brightness diminishes in sequence, like a meteor.
