One thing I did that wasn't in the tutorials is that I used the layer mask on an adjustment layer. It's on the Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer clipped to the original portrait layer. I wanted to brighten the sides of the face without affecting the rest of the layer. Another option to achieve a similar effect would have been to dodge that area! You will learn about masking adjustment layers in future projects.
