Reflections on The Gaze (i):

A series of colour studies which reference snapshots from Barry Jenkins' (with Cinematographer James Laxton) short film, The Gaze, as well as respond and reflect to his accompanying text by juxtaposing it with excerpts from my own personal journal entries.
[journal entry] “beauty is malignant. it creeps up on me and imposes itself at the most inappropriate moments; often embellishing what should be repugnant. some of the most heartbreaking and traumatic memories i have are punctuated by the most beautiful music or scenery. some of the relationships i’ve had with people who’ve hurt me in the most irrevocable ways were informed by moments which, at the time, felt incredibly tender and intimate - ultimately making it all the more impossible to sever those people and moments from my life. perhaps that’s beauty is what makes them so haunting in the first place.”
