Through Victor Hugo's eyes
The brief was to design a limited edition Livre d’Artiste for Victor Hugo’s ‘‘The Alphabet is a Source’’. The text was to be set in two languages; English and French. First, three main concept were to be explored for this publication design. First concept idea was to explore definitions of each letter through mirror and shadow images using analogue photography. Second concept idea was to portray Paris in 1838 through analog collages. The final concept idea was to recreate Victor Hugo’s visual journal.

The third concept idea was chosen as the final design concept. The final design was inspired by reportage illustrations and art journal/scrapbook aesthetics. French type was set digitally and for the English type, space was left on the final InDesign layout. some illustrations were printed while most of the illustrations were hand painted on to the book. different materials such as watercolor, burlap fabric, toothpicks, pressed flowers and papers with different textures and were used to create the mixed media illustrations that would enhance the feel of a sketch/scrap book. The publication was printed to the scale of 4.5inch into 6.9 inches. Card stock paper was used in printing the book and the perfect binding technique was used in binding the final publication. A hard cover was used to give a more personal feeling to the final design. Serif typeface was used to give the typewriter to give personality and character to the final design.
