ARO Year in Review 2019

The Army Research Office's annual report "ARO in Review" is a printed publication showcasing the boldest success stories in cutting-edge, disruptive scientific discovery for the Army.

The 400-page annual publication provides an overview of the programs, investment strategies and basic science research programs funded by ARO.

In past years, ARO in Review felt more like a technical manual than a tool for outreach and engagement. It was dense– in every sense of the word– and every page fought against itself with outdated design schemes despite being filled with some of the most cutting-edge basic scientific discovery in the world.

The goal:
Help incredible science
look like incredible science

As a collaborator with scientific institutions all over the world, ARO was in need of a visually powerful communication product to encourage engagement with its extended scientific network.

The redesign boasts clarified visual design direction and emphasis on typographical hierarchy. This increases readability and allows for a smoother user experience navigating the organization's various labeling systems– crucial for inviting readers to feeling empowered to utilize the Year in Review as a tool for engaging with the organization.

"This year, we continued to improve the accessibility of content and layout of the information in the book. The stories demonstrate the connection between the extramural basic science research that we're funding and the critical impacts that research could have on the future warfighter and the Army's modernization priorities."

– Dr. Barton H. Halpern, ARO Director
