Newspaper illustrations
Appearing in the Juneau Empire's This Week and Hooligan, 2004 to 2007
Sometimes a photograph isn't enough to illustrate a newspaper article. I created the following illustrations for the Juneau Empire's arts and entertainment sections, with the exception of the Alaska Folk Festival special section. I mainly used Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, though I drew the folk festival cover in chalk pastels before making adjustments in Photoshop.
30th Alaska Folk Festival special section
Created with chalk pastels and enhanced in Adobe Photoshop
I helped sell the idea for a folk festival special section and created this illustration, plus 32 inside pages. I also contributed several articles.
This Week, July 15-21, 2004, cover
Created in Adobe Illustrator CS
Illustrates cover story on Lynne Cox's visit to Juneau to promote her book about her Antarctic swimming adventures.
This Week, Oct. 20-26, 2005
Created using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
Another cover story about a book signing, this time the author wrote about Juneau's perennial avalanche danger. I like the placement of the teasers on the edges of the snowflake.
Bear maze
Created in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
Yet another story about an author and his book! In this case, all I had to work with was a canned author's pic. The book was about an area in Alaska that's densely populated by grizzly bears.
