"adidas and Yohji Yamamoto return for the latest release of Y-3’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection. Inspired by the conceptual theme of cover, with the aim of protecting the wearer from urban rainfall, the Y-3 GR.1P GTX silhouette combines enhanced functionality with sleek minimalism. Evolving the adidas legacy and drawing on a shared ethos of forward-thinking design, the Y-3 GR.1P GTX boasts a distinctly progressive look. Featuring a minimal, stripped back heavy tumbled leather upper matched with GORE-TEX lining and classic eyestays, the aesthetically avant-garde silhouette is simultaneously waterproof and breathable. Taking inspiration from adidas’ archive of protective silhouettes, the striking look is then accentuated by the addition of a bold rubber outsole with a heavy patterned texture which extends into high midsole sidewalls, creating an exaggerated yet elegant shape.Continuing the seasonal theme of enhanced adaptability in the face of harsh urban all-weather conditions, the Y-3 GR.1P GTX is made-up in both high and low-top versions. In quintessential fashion, the Y-3 GR.1P HIGH GTX is available in an all-black monochromatic colorway, meanwhile the low-cut Y-3 GR.1P GTX is composed of a black upper complemented by a contrasting white rubber outsole. EXTRA FUNCTIONAL & HIGHLY MINIMAL PROTECTION, GRIP & COMFORT
The idea was to create the most comfortable and strongest shoe for the Spring/Summer 2021 range.
In order to do so, we visited the adidas archives and looked for the most protective shoes in our history. There we found many examples of mostly basketball and training shoes, which were providing protection and strength throughout rubber parts wrapping the upper (ProModel, Superstar “Shell-toe”, Montreal, etc)
This is the reason why the Y-3 GR.1P features very high midsole sidewalls with a an heavy texture for ultimate protective and grip function. For a better visual contrast with it, the upper is made in the most minimalist and authentic way, only featuring the iconic adidas three stripes, classic eyestay and extra padded heel collar (for the high version) showing the bold Y-3 logo.

Delving deep into the adidas archive, the brand's cross-disciplinary design team looked for sources of inspiration that would allow them to creatively reinterpret the DNA of the 3-Stripes Brand. With the aim of creating a silhouette that is both comfortable and aesthetically distinct, the team was instantly drawn to a number of adidas· iconic performance basketball and training sneakers: from the Pro-Model to the Superstar. Borrowing a number of features from the archival silhouettes, such as high midsole sidewalls and wrap-around rubber details, the design of the Y-3 GR.1 P GTX was all about enhanced protection and grip.
Never the brand to stay languishing in the past, however, Y-3 infused the sneaker with stateof-the-art protective GORE-TEX lining and elevated the outsole with unique patterned ridging. It also wouldn't be Y-3 without an injection of Yohji's quintessential minimalism.
With this in mind, the silhouette's upper is stripped back, only displaying adidas· classic 3-Stripes branding.
For its inaugural launch, the Y-3 GR.1 P GTX arrives in both high and low cut silhouettes.
