Self-Portrait Block

For this assignment students were given 3.5" cubes that we made by cutting cedar fence posts into sections.  I modified heavily a lesson about using objects as a self portrait in Painting as Language by Craig McDaniel to help students develop their imagery for the project.

Jean Vadebancour's blocks with lovely images of candy also inspired this project.

Students were to do a self-portrait on one side of the block and use other imagery that expressed things about them on other surfaces of the block.  At least 2 other sides (besides their portrait) needed to be somewhat realistic.

Ava's block includes images of her cat, headphones with collaged sheet music of her mother's favorite music, an origami rose, and the curtains from her childhood bedroom.
