Abstract

Life Pills is a technological pill box, designed for age groups from sixty and up, which allowsmonitoring the intake of pills throughout the week via a screen.The object communicates with a specific smartphone App in which you can set the timeand day for taking the respective pills. Once updated, Life Pills will ring on timeindicated in such a way that it will become almost impossible to forget to hire a certain onepill.

The increase in average life has undergone a sudden surge since the Second World War World. Life expectancy in Italy is currently 84.5 years for women and 79.4 for men. In fact, pharmaceutical research has made numerous therapies available, increasingly precise and effective: healthy elderly people in Italy went from 18% of the total in 2004 to 31% in 2014, a progress equivalent to 2 million more people (1). However scientific progress has resulted the need to take more and more drugs, especially in old age. The most frequent problems related to taking all the pills that every elderly person needs they are often related to the amount and time slots in which these drugs are taken, often several times a day, some before having eaten the meal and others on a "full stomach". Research initial took into account people of different seniority ranges ie 65-75, 76-84, and over 85 years old, asking them a questionnaire regarding their method of taking drugs, e the hypothetical use of tools to help. After careful study of the results, we found that not all subjects are independent in taking drugs. Some of the main reasons that contributing to this problem are forgetfulness, which ranges from an hour or two until no pill intake, the high number of drugs to be taken throughout the day in several time slots. Another problem encountered by the analyzes is that relating to vision problems in the read the leaflet of each pill.
These cartoons summarize all the most common actions / forgetfulness by the elderly regarding the organization and taking of daily pills. The first focuses on the concept of "which pill should I take today?" however, simply at the level of who is anchored to the use of the respective boxes, while in the second it is explained that in common pill boxes there is no division by day, consequently opening it often does not know what kind of pill it is.Vision is another common problem for the elderly, so reading the respective leaflets could be complicated.In the last point the concept of a simple forgetting to take a certain medicine is simplified, due to the will of the elderly to be completely autonomous, even if there is often difficulty with regards to memory and without someone to remind them, they leave the house without having used the necessary medicines.

Objectives / briefing of the project 

The Life Pills project has the following objectives:- Reduce the mnemonic effort required for the correct intake of the various drugs over the periodday;- Facilitate the supply of various drugs for the elderly;- Facilitate the reading of the leaflet, it causes vision problems in old age;- Facilitate the monitoring of the drug intake of the elderly by third parties (children, grandchildren,relatives);

Recipients 

Specifically, the project is aimed at the aforementioned seniority brackets, to simplify theirmanagement and intake of drugs. In addition, people close to them also benefitdelegates to help in taking various medicines. 

Project proposals 

Life Pills has dimensions of 160 x 80 mm, equal to the average size of a latest smartphonegeneration and 36 mm thick. At the top it has a touch screen, witha sliding opening that detects the compartments dedicated to pills in the underlying part.Everything is managed by an application to be installed on the smartphone of the user or in case ofadvanced age of children, grandchildren or relatives.As for the materials, the case is in ABS and the ultra-resistant glass screen, and the technologyinternal is similar to that of a smartphone today.  

Strengths and improvements achieved 

Through Life Pills it is now possible to manage in the best way the various medicines that our usersthey must take during the day. One of our strengths is to give theopportunity for our users to address the problem of forgetting to takedrugs at the correct time through the pill box, an App and a connected timer, managing to solveproblems encountered thanks to the data obtained from the questionnaire.
