Plastic Odyssey - Mold Design

This post presents one of my work done in 2020 during a 6-week internship at Plastic Odyssey.

In short, Plastic Odyssey is an organization fighting against plastic pollution. Located in Marseille, they work actively in several countries. This group intends to promote recycling processes and recovery of plastic waste throughout the world in order to limit its concentration in the oceans but also on land, waste being then used as a raw material in different sectors.

The main objective is therefore to share plastic recycling solutions on a large scale, with Low technologies to more industrial technologies (extruder, mechanical press, pyrolyser). This can range from a simple individual initiative to a partnership with a local company.

My role was to design recycled plastic products for local populations, particularly in the construction and furniture sector: tiles, brick, partitions, insulation, seating, tables. So I designed some objects with their respective moulds to allow mass production. The aim of this work is to be shared in areas sensitive to plastic pollution in order to demonstrate the feasibility of transforming waste into useful and functional products.

Drawing - Punch
Drawing - Ejectors
Drawing - Tile
Here are the plans of the mechanical press
I show below an overview of the first version of the tile. This one had a better hold and sealing, but the mold had few errors due to the complexity of the tile shape.
