Capstone Project
TROPE OF PARADOR
Hotel of Global Extreme

By: TAM Ka Man, Carman | Tutor: Gerhard Bruyns
In this ever-changing world, interior design has been shaped by the cultural contexts over time. “TROPE OF PARADOR / hotel o global extreme” is a capstone project that acts as a method of design comparatives between different narratives. Referring to one of the most iconic movie sets, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014, Wes Anderson), the design of the hotel is transformed from an Art Deco style to a post-WWII Eastern European architecture style. The project queries the future evolution of the hotel where four additional scenarios are inserted, including Coronavirus, World War III, robot era, and cyberpunk. The framework of the project is to recreate the selected movie scene according to the characteristics of each distinctive scenario. In each scene, a specific element is extracted such as the concierge, the elevator, the hallway, and the bedroom. The chosen elements are reconstructed based on the design criteria of each scenario, ranging from the mood of the interiors to the materiality.
