Conceptual Book Cover Project
The goal of this project was to create three covers for the selected book. The first cover should be typographic, the second is made with physical elements, and the third one is the designer's choice.
I chose the book by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky "Crime and Punishment". This is one of the most world famous Russian books. I think that it is known for its idea and many symbols that the author uses, revealing the meaning of the work and talking important topics such as love, faith, poverty, despair, repentance.
My task was to create covers using the symbols from this book to convey its ideas to the viewer.
1. Typography cover
I used free mock up from https://www.psdmockups.com/three-hardcover-book-pile-psd-mockup/
As a typographic solution, I used handwritten text from my sketches. I think it conveys the intimacy between the protagonist and the reader. It is as if he is writing you a letter, telling you about his story. And by reading the book, you really get to know all his thoughts, torments and motives.

I also use symbols such as ax, money, cross. The split symbolizes the division of the soul of the protagonist (also his surname -  Raskolnikov contains the word "split" in Russian).
2. Physical Elements
I used free mock up from https://www.psdmockups.com/three-hardcover-book-pile-psd-mockup/
As a physical element, I used a paper-cut human figure, which I ripped in half to symbolize a split. I also made a drop with paint and using Photoshop I turned it into a cross - a symbol of faith. I also added an ax and money as the main symbols of the crime.
3. Designer's choice
I used free mock up from https://www.psdmockups.com/three-hardcover-book-pile-psd-mockup/
For this cover, I used a drop of red paint to represent blood. I made other symbols in black and white so that they do not stand out much.
This project taught me to seek ideas and create designs with meaning.
I hope I managed to convey right messages through these covers.
If you have any feedback for me, I'd love to hear it!
