Fallow: Engineered Silkscreen Print
The brown color of dead leaves that serves as a backdrop for the nature in New England was my inspiration for this print. I wanted to use imagery that represents the nostalgia of going on hikes with my dog. I began by dyeing my fabric brown and then used discharge print paste to remove the brown dye from certain areas and create an abstract blue pattern flowing through the center of the piece, using shapes that could represent the sky through the trees, water, or a walking path. I burned several textures and images into small silkscreens and printed them in layers, building up texture in certain areas. The tree trunks with heron nests on the sides serve as borders to the vertical edges of the composition. The final size of the piece is 72" x 90".
