Notebook Garment: Knitting as a Record of Memory

Notebook Garment: Knitting as a Record of Memory
This garment explores how knitting functions as a physical act that records information and how the rows of knitting mimic writing on a page. Each stitch of knitting is a record of time, which reminded me of my habit of notetaking, where each mark on the page represents what I was thinking in that moment. I was interested in using knitting as a system with which I could translate old notebook pages into a textural surface that is a manifestation of old memories and feelings. I structured this garment in a way that mimics a book, with "pages" of fabric that can hang at the sides or be stretched and displayed across the body, securing with snaps. I created a system though which lines of text from my notebook pages can be encoded into a punchcard pattern, and can be knitted into the fabric as a texture using the tuck stitch. The colors are meant to imitate old paper and book covers which conjures feelings of memory and the passage of time.
