Designer Impact Statement

Hello!

Below is my designer impact statement which I have developed throughout my years of studying to become an Architect. This statement outlines my core beliefs and approach to design currently, which will also project into the future.

Enjoy!
My name is James Curtis, I am a third-year design student studying a Bachelor of Design at Queensland University of Technology. The specific fields of design in which I have placed much of my study towards include Architecture (Major) and Landscape Architecture (Minor). I also have plans to complete a complementary Construction Management (Minor) degree in my final year of study to broaden my breadth of knowledge and widen future career pathways.

Along my journey as a student of architecture, I have developed a strong set of underlying principles both deriving from teachings and personal philosophy. These principles have been grasped by myself and reflected across many of my different design projects completed both for competitions and university assessment. With architectural design becoming ever more popular and a demanded service within the community I believe that it is essential for all modern designers to practice sustainable design. Sustainable design is a concept that I have grown very fond of throughout my journey as a student designer, and something which I reflect across a multitude of my design projects to the greatest extent possible. With the world’s resources depleting and the environment being affected day in day out due to design and new developments it is vitally important that with what we take from the environment for our design is given back in some way, shape or form. Sustainable materiality and processes are a vital and important concept which should be reflected in all modern architectural designs in order for us as designers to keep doing what we love and continue to satisfy the community with the beautiful artworks which we produce.

The concept of design for good is also something that I think is incredibly important not only for the environment but also for that of the satisfaction of the community or persons which the particular design scheme is intended for. Designing a space for people that will fit and satisfy multiple needs of certain people that will utilise the space is an incredibly important element of modern design. With design and design problems becoming furthermore complex in the current times, it is important that we as designers are ensuring that we are designing for purpose and intent to suit a wide range of users from all backgrounds and abilities. This ensures that the beauty and benefits that design has to offer can be experienced by everyone to the same level and have a positive impact on people’s lives.

Alongside my philosophies of design which I have grasped along the journey of my student life, I have also acquired a broad set of skills that I can offer as a designer. I am particularly skilled at planning and problem solving to ensure a deadline can be met, while also providing a successful end product which will satisfy the clients requirements. I am particularly skilled at research and communicating design across multiple mediums.

I am excited and strive to complete my Bachelor of Design degree and take my skills into the real world to take on professional projects, not only broaden my skills as a young designer, but to offer my wide range of skills within a professional application.
