INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS

A more minimalistic poster for one of my all time favorite movies, the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers. For the design my two primary goals were to represent the invasion as more of an infection, spreading from person to person like a virus, slowly taking over the world. More importantly though, I want call the film's most important character to attention, the city of San Francisco. Over the course of the film it shifts from just being the film's setting and into its ultimate villain. Carefully director Phillip Kaufman lays out the city's landmarks, both famous –the Transamerica Pyramid and City Hall, and non famous – the character's houses and places of work, and making them feel increasingly eerie and alien. By the end of the film, San Francisco feels less like a city built by humans, but rather pod within itself.

And of course at the very bottom is Veronica Cartwright, during what must be the film's most iconic scene. I don't want to spoil the ending, but what I will say is that I chose her over the more iconic shot of Sutherland, as she truly is the end of the chain of events, and it is because of her that the film feels truly futile.
The final design. My goal was to make something that would be visually appealing to those who might not know anything about the film, while containing key information and iconography from the plot.
Two of the final prints. While I personally prefer the red and blue palette, I wanted felt like a green and pink one felt a bit more true to the film's tone and art direction. As you can see with the right image, I also printed versions without the planet, as it did break up the appealing symmetry of the piece.
