Musica diffusa nello spazio pubblico urbano

Master of Science in Interior and Spatial Design Thesis @ Politecnico di Milano
The research thesis has as its starting point the impact of today’s coronavirus pandemic on the cultural sector. From here a series of reflections begin on the need to rethink the urban public space as a function of a new type of cultural fruition. Live music is identified as a key theme and deepened up to the design phase. The link that music has with society and places is analyzed, with a focus on the relationship between it and the urban context, also from a musical ecology perspective. The latest innovations in the acoustic field are also presented through significant case studies relating to new sound technologies. Finally, the research part ends with a look at the musical genius loci of the city of Milan, which will be the context of intervention for the subsequent project
development. The Soundwave project has the primary objective of bringing the live music experience back to a collective dimension, positioning itself in an emblematic place of music in Milan: Piazza della Scala. The project takes shape in an attempt to solve the problem of “musical pollution” produced by concerts in urban areas. In fact, directional amplification technology is used, which defines “sound spots” outside of which the sound does not propagate, allowing a new way of enjoying live music in the public space.
