Cardboard, conte crayon, paper bags
This cardboard art sculpture is a monument preserving the Carlsbad power plant that currently being demolished due to government deals. The peeling, degraded appearance of the cardboard replica represents the power plant’s current visual state while its placement in nature shows its important ties to the land. Although it originally served a utilitarian purpose, the Carlsbad power plant has become a representation of home for those who surf, work, and live around it. It is as much a part of the beach landscape as the ocean and wildlife that surrounds it. Throughout my childhood, the power plant was never an ugly disgrace to the coastline, but a community landmark. This piece commemorates my community’s experiences with this monument and the destruction that will soon befall it.
