Sample Script - Blink Twice

INT. RESTAURANT KITCHEN - DAY
Pots boil, people move around quickly, a large grill spits fire as steaks and ribs cook away.  SCOTT REDMOND, 45 dressed in a chef’s coat and a ball cap that reads THE SPOT works rapidly.
SCOTT
I need the order for table seven taken out NOW!  Lets get a move on people.
Employees move faster.  Several line cooks pick up the pace flipping steaks, flames shoot in the air from hot sauté pans.  This kitchen is busy and it is obvious that Scott is leader of the pack.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
Jamie!
JAMIE
Yes, Chef!
SCOTT
Nice work on that last table.  Let’s keep it going.
JAMIE
“Thank you Chef
Employees pick up the pace even more.
SCOTT
OK, table 500 has got to get cranking.  Ryan, how are those steaks coming?
RYAN
Riding about 10 minutes Chef!
Scott approaches the broiler which is smoking with small flames leaping in the air from time to time.  It is filled side to side, top to bottom with steaks, ribs, chicken.
SCOTT
(annoyed)
Why’s it taking so long Ryan, you’re holding up the flow!
RYAN
Got two well-done sirloins Chef, they are taking a while to cook.
SCOTT
(pointing at several of the steaks)
Seems like these should be more done, did you put them on as soon as I called them?
RYAN
I did Chef!
SCOTT
(sternly)
Don’t you lie to me son, if you slipped up I can forgive that but I can’t and won’t forgive a blatant lie.
Scott stares down Ryan
SCOTT (CONT’D)
Your silence is speaking volumes,  would you like to try your answer again.
RYAN
I had a full broiler Chef, I couldn’t put them on right away, there was no room!
SCOTT
So instead of saying that at the moment you decide to hold off and then lie to me about it?
Ryan turns the steaks back and forth avoiding eye contact with Scott.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
I do not have the time nor the patience for your games.  This may just be a job to you but it is my life and my reputation that goes out with every plate of food and I don’t appreciate how lightly you take being responsible for those two things.
Nothing is moving, employees are standing around avoiding the situation.  Ryan squirms like a trapped animal.  A very tense scene is unfolding.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
(scolding)
I had high hopes for you young Mr. Ryan but this disturbs me greatly.  A man that would lie about something as small as not having room to put on some steaks that were called, it makes me wonder what else he might lie about.  What else have you been lying to me about sir?
RYAN
Nothing Chef!
SCOTT
(like a drill sergeant)
And I’m supposed to believe you?
RYAN
Yes Chef!
Through a swinging door enters JESSICA, 29 she is attractive,  well dressed and wearing a name tag that reads Restaurant Manager
JESSICA
(softly)
Pardon me, Chef?
Scott does not respond.  He still has Ryan in his cross hairs.
JESSICA (CONT’D)
(louder)
Chef?
Scott slowly turns his head and glares at Jessica.
SCOTT
How many times have I told you not to bother me when we are in the middle of a rush.  You know, it’s like I talk to myself, I swear to God.
Jessica instantly turns red and drops her eyes to the ground.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
WHAT?
JESSICA
You, ah, have an important phone call.
Scott continues with the glare and says nothing.
JESSICA (CONT’D)
It’s the police, and they say it’s important, very important actually.
Scott instantly calms down and looks concerned.
SCOTT
Police?  What would the police want with me?
JESSICA
They wouldn’t tell me much just that it was very important and it was about a family member.
The blood drains from Scott’s face.  He is visibly concerned.
SCOTT
Um, ah, transfer the call to my office and tell them I will be right with them.
JESSICA
Yes sir.
Jessica exits quickly
SCOTT
And Jessica!
Jessica stops in mid step, sighs and turns around
JESSICA
Yes Chef...
SCOTT
Thank you .
Jessica smiles and leaves.
Scott regains control of himself.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
We are not done my good man, when I get off the phone we will finish this conversation.
RYAN
(Sarcastically)
Yes Chef, I will look forward to it.
Scott lets it drop.  He addresses everyone.
SCOTT
Let’s keep the food moving everyone, I have to take this call but I will be right back and these tickets had better be gone or some of YOU may be.
The uncomfortable quiet goes away as everyone starts hurrying around again.
INT. SCOTTS OFFICE  DAY
Scott enters the office and removes his apron throwing it in a chair.  He walks behind his desk and we see the red hold button blinking on his phone.  He stares at it and slowly lowers himself into his chair.  He rubs his face and holds his head in his hands.
Scott opens his eyes, the red light is still blinking, he GRABS the receiver and pushes the blinking light.
SCOTT
Chef Redmond speaking
On the phone is DETECTIVE CHRIS DOANE, 51 his voice commanding and gruff.
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE
Mr. Redmond, this is Detective Doane with the Canton Police Department in Canton Ohio.
Scott doodles on a piece of paper while he talks.
SCOTT
Canton?  Is my Grandmother OK?
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE
Actually, that’s why I’m calling.  I’m afraid I’ve got some difficult news.
SCOTT
I don’t understand, is she OK?
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE
I’m afraid there is no easy way to say this and I apologize for having to do it over the phone but I’m afraid your Grandmother has died.
The pen falls from Scott’s hand. He can’t speak, his lips move but nothing happens.
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE (CONT’D)
  (concerned)
Mr. Redmond, are you there?
Scott is silent, struggling.
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE (CONT’D)
(very concerned)
Are you still with me Mr. Redmond?
SCOTT
(sobbing lightly, attempting to get it together)
Yes, yes I am here.
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE
I’m sure you have many questions and please know that I am going to answer every one of them.  We’re going to need you to come into town as from what I understand you’re the only family that Mrs. Redmond had, is that correct?
Scott gets control of his voice.
SCOTT
Yes I’m her only living family.  I also am her power of attorney.
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE
Well as such sir we need you to come in and identify your Grandmothers so that our investigation can begin.  How soon do you think you can make the trip?
SCOTT
Identify?  Investigation?  I’m afraid I’m a bit confused.
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE
Your Grandmother appears to have been the victim of a violent crime she was discovered in her home and while we are very certain that it is your Grandmother who was the victim we do need a visual verification before we begin our investigation into exactly what happened at the home.
Scott is doodling again, he is drawing a lamp.  He stops.
SCOTT
Oh my god!  Was it a break in?
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE
We’re not sure, we were hoping that you could help us out there by telling us if anything is missing from the house.
SCOTT
Of course I’ll be happy to help in any way I can.  I’ll get the first flight I can.
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE
I appreciate that sir. If you could give me your e-mail address I will forward you all my contact information that way you can reply back with when you will be arriving.
SCOTT
It’s chef@thespot.com
Scott pauses, his eyes beginning to tear up.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
I just can’t believe this, it doesn’t make sense.
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE
It never does sir.
An awkward pause
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE (CONT’D)
I’ll get that info right out to you and I look forward to meeting you in the next few days.
SCOTT
Thank you Detective.  I’ll have a flight booked by the end of the night.
DETECTIVE CHIS DOANE
Till then...
SCOTT
Thank you for calling.
Scott hangs up the phone and immediately picks it back up and hits the intercom.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
Jessica, I need you to call Chris at home and tell him I need him to come in right away.  I’ve had a family emergency and am going to be leaving town for a few days.  Please send Chris in as soon as he gets here.
He hangs up before he gets a response.
INT. AIRPORT WAITING AREA  NIGHT
A large crowd of people move rapidly through the terminal, SCOTT sits with an iPad in hand, working away
FLIGHT DISPATCHER (V.O.)
Now boarding flight number 801 for Cleveland and New York City, please have your boarding pass ready when you come to the gate and thank you for flying Southwest air.
Scott packs up his stuff, finds his boarding pass and heads to the gate.
INT. PLANE  NIGHT
Scott is in a window seat and staring out the window at the blackness lost in his thought.  An older frail looking woman gently lowers herself into the seat next to him.  Scott doesn’t acknowledge her in any way.
ELDERLY WOMAN
You getting off in Cleveland or heading all the way to New York City?
Scott ignores her but there in no way to deter the lady
ELDERLY WOMAN (CONT’D)
I’m heading home to New York, my sister is dying.
Scott turns and looks at her.
SCOTT
I’m sorry to hear that.
ELDERLY WOMAN
Yeah, well, what you going to do?  Happens to us all sooner or later.  If you’re lucky it’s later.
SCOTT
I’m heading home to bury my Grandmother.
ELDERLY WOMAN
I know.
SCOTT
Excuse me?
ELDERLY WOMAN
She told me, so I know
SCOTT
(confused)
Know what?  I don’t understand.
ELDERLY WOMAN
(nodding)
Blink Twice.
SCOTT
What?
ELDERLY WOMAN
(she continues nodding and smiles)
Blink Twice, that’s what she says.  Blink twice.
Scott stares at her.
SCOTT
(getting annoyed)
I’m sorry, I have no idea what the hell you’re talking about.
The flight attendant appears next to the elderly woman.
FLIGHT ATTENDANT
Can I get anyone anything before we take off?
Scott looks up at her.
SCOTT
I’m fine but maybe my new friend here would like to watch the in flight movie.
He looks back at the elderly woman and she is sound asleep.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
Or not.
The flight attendant gently puts the seat belt on the elderly woman and moves on.
INT. PLANE - NIGHT (LATER)
The elderly woman is now covered with a blanket and still asleep.  Scott is reading his iPad
Over the cabin loud speaker we hear the voice of the captain.
CAPTAIN
Ladies and gentlemen, we are making our final approach into Cleveland and as such would like to ask that any of you who don’t have your seat belts on, please do so now.  We should be on the ground in about 10 minutes and for those of you leaving the plane in Cleveland, it’s been an honor flying you this evening.
Through the window we watch the lights of the city grow larger and brighter as the plane quickly approaches land and then lightly kisses the runway and rolls to a stop.  Scott prepares to get off the plane
Scott lightly touches his seat mate to awaken her.
SCOTT
(softly)
Ma’am we’ve landed.
Scott continues to gather his things.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
Ma’am, it’s time to move.  I need to get off the plane.
A flight attendant is walking past. Scott flags her down.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
Excuse me.  She’s slept the whole flight and I’ve tried to wake her but I don’t want to startle her, do you think you could give me a hand stirring her?
FLIGHT ATTENDANT #2
(overly friendly)
Of course sir, she’s so sweet.  Is she your Grandmother.
SCOTT
No, just a fellow passenger.
FLIGHT ATTENDANT #2
(gently but firmly)
Ma’am, time to wake up.. We are in Cleveland.
Her head falls forward.
FLIGHT ATTENDANT #2
MA’AM!  Are you alright?
She puts her fingers on the elderly woman’s neck.
FLIGHT ATTENDANT #2 (CONT’D)
(startled)
Oh no!
She looks directly at Scott.
FLIGHT ATTENDANT #2 (CONT’D)
We’ve got a tremendous problem
INT. AIRPORT SECURITY OFFICE - NIGHT
Scott sits in a small office lit by one overhead light.  A small desk and two chairs barely fit.  The door opens and JOHN KELLY, 42 enters.  John is wearing an airport security uniform and carrying a clipboard which he is reading as enters.
JOHN KELLY
Mr. Redmond, correct?
SCOTT
(slightly annoyed)
How long is this going to take?  I have very little time.
Scott stares at the guard.
JOHN KELLY
I’ll make this as quick as I can sir, can you please tell me exactly what you remember about Mrs..
John shuffles through some of the papers on the clipboard
JOHN KELLY (CONT’D)
Schott, please.
Scott sighs and rolls his eyes.
JOHN KELLY (CONT’D)
I know this is burdening you Mr. Redmond but someone is dead and we need to make sure we know exactly what happened prior to her passing.  If you cooperate, this will go much smoother.
Scott lowers his head and concedes.
SCOTT
Of course, I’m sorry.  It’s just that well, I am on my way home because my Grandmother passed away earlier this evening and I’m making my way home to handle her final wishes.  I’m tired and grieving so please forgive my callousness.
John looks up from the clipboard for the first time.
JOHN KELLY
Your Grandmother passed?  My condolences sir.  We’ll get you on your way as quickly as we can.
SCOTT
I would really appreciate that.
JOHN KELLY
Did Mrs. Schott say anything to you while you were seated next to one another?
SCOTT
We had a bit of an odd discussion, I just assumed it was old age talking.
John scoots his chair closer to the table and lies the clipboard down.
JOHN KELLY
Could you explain further please?
SCOTT
She told me she was heading to New York to visit her sister who was dying.  I expressed my sadness and mentioned that I was on my way to bury my Grandmother and she said she knew.
Scott looks directly into John’s eyes.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
(he hesitates)
It was...creepy.
JOHN KELLY
Creepy?
SCOTT
(shuddering)
Yeah!  She said she knew then she said, blink twice.
JOHN KELLY
Blink Twice, what does that mean?
Scott squirms in his seat.
SCOTT
I have no idea.  When I went to ask her, she had fallen asleep, or I thought she had.
Scott squirms some more.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
I’m afraid I’m going to need to use the rest room.
John shuffles some more papers.
JOHN KELLY
If you can just give me a few more minutes, we’ll be able to wrap this up.  If  that’s OK?
SCOTT
(annoyed)
Sir, it has been a very long, very horrible day and I’ve told you everything I can.  I didn’t know Mrs. Schott and I have not a clue what she was talking about but it seems rather apparent to me that she was suffering from dementia and nature just ran its course.  I can honestly tell you that she passed peacefully, I had no idea till I asked her to move so I could exit and that’s when the stewardess discovered she wasn’t breathing.  That’s the whole story.
John continues with the paper shuffling.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
Officer, I really need to be going.
John looks up from the clipboard.
JOHN KELLY
I think I have all the info I need, your free to go Mr. Redmond.
INT. AIRPORT TERMINAL - NIGHT
The terminal is nearly vacant
Scott stands close to the exit, he is on the phone and pacing.
SCOTT
Answer, answer, answer!!
Still pacing, the phone rings on.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
You have got to be kidding me!
Scott stops pacing, lowers the phone and stares at the screen.
SCOTT (CONT’D)
Come on Mary, pick up the phone!
He moves his finger to hit the END button just as the line CLICKS open.
MARY
(sleepily)
Mmmm..hello?
Scott does a little happy dance.
SCOTT
(over joyed)
Mary!  Oh, thank God!
MARY
(still gathering her senses)
Hello?  Who is this.
SCOT
This is Scott, Scott Redmond.
