I'm not a girl, not yet a woman
When I took these photos of my cousin, I realized that I was capturing a moment in time. Like a butterfly emerging from it's chrysalis, I was documenting this pivotal time in her life.
From a baby girl strutting in her mother's high heel shoes and jewelry, this is her now in her chrysalis. A caterpillar to a butterfly, a girl to woman, this is inside her chrysalis.
I think of Britney Spears' song I'm not a girl, not yet a woman. The chorus is:
I'm not a girl
Not yet a woman
All I need is time
A moment that is mine
While I'm in between

Background about this project
I had just bought my first digital camera in 2006 a Nikon D40. Yolande my cousin, was going to study beauty, make up, beauty, styling fashion and I just wanted to take photos. This is what happened during that time.
I hope to do this for other girls at this stage of their lives.
